Lagos State is making progress in bringing improvements to the lives of people living with a disability but many disabled people are being left behind. There are about 3 million persons living with diverse forms of disability in the state and for a city with an estimated population of 26 million persons, this shows that an estimated 9% of the residents of Lagos state are persons living with a disability. People with disabilities frequently experience marginalization with regard to unequal access to Health care, education, employment, and political participation. Usually, they are very vulnerable to poverty and are almost always found among the lowest class in the community hierarchy. Also, many low-income communities in Lagos are plagued with exposure to various unsanitary environmental conditions with resultant effects on the health and wellbeing of the residents. Since 2018, the Peter Jasten Foundation has been supporting these low-income communities and individuals with a disability to live a more inclusive and rewarding life. We are empowering people with a disability through various capacity-building programs that transfer skills and knowledge to them as well as bring improvements to their economic wellbeing. We are supporting communities through our health outreaches aimed at sensitizing members of the communities on the gains of a healthy environment. We are supporting various community residents and people living with a disability with scholarships for the ease of accessing quality education.
